[About ALI]

Who We Are

Alternative Livelihood Initiative (ALI) was founded in direct response to some of Nigeria's most pressing realities — persistent poverty, limited economic opportunity, weak market access and the vulnerability of low-income households to shocks including inflation, climate change and social exclusion.

We are a registered nonprofit organization established by development practitioners who saw these gaps firsthand and chose to act. From day one, our work has been practical, inclusive and community-led, designed not just to help people survive, but to help them thrive.
We believe lasting change comes not from charity, but from capability. That is why we invest in skills, systems and structures that communities can own and sustain long after any program ends.
Who We Are
[Our Story]
Born from a belief that poverty is not permanent.
We saw communities with enormous potential, held back by a lack of skills, capital and connections. So we built an organization to bridge those gaps — through practical training, enterprise support, financial inclusion and deep community partnership.
“By 2029, we will empower 10,000 men, women and youth across Nigeria — equipping them with sustainable income, diversified livelihoods and nutrition-sensitive enterprises.”

Tailored Lawn & Garden Solutions

Inclusiveness

We believe every individual, regardless of gender, age, ability, or background, deserves equal access to opportunities. We actively engage women, youth, persons with disabilities, and displaced populations in designing and delivering our programs — because the best solutions come from the people they serve.

Dignity & Respect

Our interventions are rights-based, not charity-driven. We treat every beneficiary, partner, and stakeholder with respect — empowering people to take ownership of their futures while preserving their cultural identity and self-worth.

Innovation

We integrate climate-smart technologies, digital tools, and market-driven approaches to tackle complex livelihood challenges. Innovation for us means adapting proven strategies to local realities — ensuring every solution is both relevant and sustainable.

Accountability

Transparency and responsibility are non-negotiable. Through strong monitoring and evaluation systems, clear reporting mechanisms, and open community communication, we ensure resources are used effectively and trust is maintained at every level.

Community Ownership

Sustainability begins with communities. By building local leadership, strengthening cooperatives, and empowering communities to manage their own interventions, we ensure our programs thrive long after external support concludes. Our communities are not beneficiaries — they are change-makers.
